The little tropical tree Santalum Album, also known as Indian sandalwood, is the traditional source of sandalwood oil and wood. Southern India and Southeast Asia are its natural habitats. Some faiths, including Hinduism, regard it as sacred, and some societies place considerable value on its aromatic properties. However, the species' high value has resulted in over-exploitation, putting the natural population in risk of extinction. Although the plant lives a long time, harvesting is only possible after several years.

The evergreen tree grows to a height of 4 to 9 meters. They might live to be a hundred years old. In young trees, the reddish or brown bark appears smooth and practically black, then cracks with a red reveal. The heartwood, which is located in the center of the tree, is the sole portion of the tree that is used for its aroma. It has a yellow-brown hue, is hard and has an oily feel, and is ideal for carving owing to its toughness. The sapwood, the tree's exterior layer, is odorless. Sapwood is used to manufacture turnery objects and is white or yellow in hue. Both the wood and oil are in high demand and are an important
